Edward Mattison is a Corning native. He attended Corning East High School where he was a 9-time varsity letter winner and team captain of the football, wrestling, and baseball teams. Additionally, in 1985, he earned All-STC honors in football. On the academic side, Ed was a National Honor Society member and earned a number of academic scholarships and awards, including the New York Regents Scholarship, the Marine Corps Award, and the West Point Association of Graduates Preparatory Scholarship prior to his graduation in 1986.
 
In 1987, Ed received a Congressional Appointment from U.S. Representative Amory Houghton to attend the United States Military Academy. While at West Point, Ed adapted his football and wrestling skills to the sport of judo. Over the next four years, Ed earned his black belt while amassing over 100 victories and 12 individual tournament titles. He was a three-time East Coast Collegiate Judo Champion (’89, ’90, and ’91) and two-time National Collegiate Judo All-American (’89, ’90), highlighted by 2nd and 3rd place finishes at the NCJA National Championships.
 
In 1991, Ed graduated from West Point with a BS in Computer Science and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. His service to his country continues to this day as Ed approaches 20 years of active duty military service. While serving in the Army, Ed has held a variety of Artillery and Information Technology positions. Ed twice served as a Company Commander and is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During his Army career, Ed has continued his educational pursuits, earning a Master’s degree in Computer Science from Binghamton University in 2001. He is currently a PhD ABD Candidate at Binghamton University (all but dissertation) and should earn his doctorate in Computer Science in May 2011. He currently holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and serves as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at his alma mater, West Point.
 
Ed has been married to the former Annette Cratsley for almost 20 years (June 1991) and they have three daughters: Cassandra (senior at East High), Corrina (freshman at East), and Arianna (student at Carder Elementary). Ed is the son of Davida Telehany and James Mattison as well as step-father James Telehany and step-mother Connie Mattison. 
 
Ed continues to participate in sports as a player in both baseball and softball. However, Ed is most proud of his 10+ years as a youth softball coach in the Corning area. Passing on athletic skills and serving as a role model to a younger generation has proven to be one of the most rewarding experiences of his life.

ARTICLE II – MEMBERSHIP


 

1. Qualifications for Membership

Membership in the Sports Hall of Fame can be achieved as either a PARTICIPANT or a CONTRIBUTOR.

    1. Participant

In order to qualify for induction into the Hall as a participant, a nominee must have participated in:

  1. A high school sport in the Corning-Painted Post area for at least three (3) years, OR

  2. A community sport in the area for at least five (5) years, OR

  3. A college sport or post high school sport for at least two (2) years after first having attended high school in the area for at least three (3) years.

1.2 Contributor

` In order to qualify for induction into the Hall as a contributor, a nominee must have contributed to a sport:

  1. In the Corning-Painted Post area for at least five (5) years OR

  2. Outside the area for at least five (5) years after first having attended high school in the area for at least three (3) years.

1.3 All candidates must be out of high school for at least five (5) years before they can be nominated for induction into the Hall.

2. Categories

Participants and contributors will be elected as members of the Sports Hall of Fame based on their outstanding performance or contribution in one of the following categories: Baseball, Basketball, Bowling, Football, Golf, Lacrosse, Motor Sports, Softball, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Track & Field/Cross Country, Volleyball, Wrestling, and a Special Category – which is left to the discretion of the Hall’s BOD.
