Born and raised in Painted Post, our guest speaker tonight is Chris Ruocco, an induct into the Corning-Painted Post Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 as a contributor,. That title of contributor fits Chris like no other. Despite an outstanding career as a high school lacrosse goalie, ‘Ruoc’ has truly been a contributor to his community and surrounding area for many years.

 
Chris played lacrosse at Corning West for four years, three of those years as the starting goaltender. He also played football for a couple of years for the Vikings, but gave that up to be the team mascot, Victory Viking, for his last two years. He capped his high school lacrosse season by being named the starting goalie for the Inaugural Exceptional Senior Lacrosse Game in 1983 for the West Division. He also played for Corning Community College.
 
Chris has been coaching since he left high school. He started in 1984 as a Babe Ruth coach and did that for ten years. He coached and served on the Board of Directors for the Painted Post Little League, coached youth lacrosse and served as the board president of that league for four years. For 18 years, Chris served as an assistant and volunteer coach for the Corning West boys lacrosse and counts being on the sideline for the Vikings first and only win over rival Corning East as one of the highlights of his life. He was also the coach of the first-ever girls lacrosse team at Corning West in 1997. Chris is currently the head coach of the varsity boys lacrosse team at Elmira Notre Dame.
 
One of his most satisfying experiences comes every summer during the Colonial Days celebration in Painted Post when he hosts, as the commissioner, the Colonial Days Wiffle Ball Tournament in his backyard at the Bobo Ruocco Memorial Field. This year will mark the 30th anniversary of the tournament. This event has a positive effect on the total community with its spirit and has grown to foster generations of family fun and good will.
 
He told board director Joe Stratton his greatest feeling is watching the kids mature from year to year and to see that smile on their face when they finally feel and realize the success of all their hard work paying off.
 
Chris has worked at Corning Inc. for 28 years, and he has served as a Union Rep for the American Flint Glass Workers and Steel Workers Union for 22 years.
 
Chris and his wife Trish live in Painted Post. He works for Corning Inc. and Trish is employed by the Corning School District. They are the proud parents of Nathan who graduated from Corning West High and is currently in his junior year at RIT where he is majoring in packaging science.

ARTICLE II – MEMBERSHIP


 

1. Qualifications for Membership

Membership in the Sports Hall of Fame can be achieved as either a PARTICIPANT or a CONTRIBUTOR.

    1. Participant

In order to qualify for induction into the Hall as a participant, a nominee must have participated in:

  1. A high school sport in the Corning-Painted Post area for at least three (3) years, OR

  2. A community sport in the area for at least five (5) years, OR

  3. A college sport or post high school sport for at least two (2) years after first having attended high school in the area for at least three (3) years.

1.2 Contributor

` In order to qualify for induction into the Hall as a contributor, a nominee must have contributed to a sport:

  1. In the Corning-Painted Post area for at least five (5) years OR

  2. Outside the area for at least five (5) years after first having attended high school in the area for at least three (3) years.

1.3 All candidates must be out of high school for at least five (5) years before they can be nominated for induction into the Hall.

2. Categories

Participants and contributors will be elected as members of the Sports Hall of Fame based on their outstanding performance or contribution in one of the following categories: Baseball, Basketball, Bowling, Football, Golf, Lacrosse, Motor Sports, Softball, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Track & Field/Cross Country, Volleyball, Wrestling, and a Special Category – which is left to the discretion of the Hall’s BOD.
